Wildflower Walk: Black Hills Research Natural Area.

  • April 25, 2015
  • 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Black Hills Research Natural Area.

The Black Hills are a group of low-lying hills located 4 miles south of Christmas Valley.

The vegetation is old-growth juniper woodland and a low growing perennial forb community in the exposed ash soils. These soils support three BLM sensitive plant species: Eriogonum cusickii (Cusick's buckwheat), Cymopterus nivalis (snowline spring parsley) and Galium serpenticum var. warnerense (Warner Mt. bedstraw).

The hike is short and easy giving ample time to botanize this unique community. The rare plants and cool soils are within a halfmile of the parking area. Two hours have been allowed for exploring before lunch. The hike will be led by Ian Grinter, Botanist, Bureau of Land Management, Lakeview Resource Area.

After lunch it would be up to participants to head back home or Ian would be available to take a longer hike to some of the other parts of the RNA.

Link to google maps for driving to the site.

Location B is where to meet the group, suggest consolidating cars there as well because the last mile of road is a little bit rough.
